Suppose someone walks into your office...
...and tells you they have a problem with porn. It's probably happened before, and it's not always an easy situation to handle.
One of the most powerful tools in a pastor's toolkit for helping a person trapped in bondage is that of personally relating to the person and providing them an opportunity for accountability. Part of the most effective healing process involves finding others who have experienced the same situation but have lived to tell the tale. Therefore, if we "become" the other person and find common ground with them, we are in a better position to bring them closer to Christ. This is a wisdom that reaches back to the times of Paul:
1 Corinthians 9
22 When I am with those who are oppressed, I share their oppression so that I might bring them to Christ. Yes, I try to find common ground with everyone so that I might bring them to Christ. 23 I do all this to spread the Good News, and in doing so I enjoy its blessings. NLT
Media is one of the most powerful tools to deliver a message that will stick in people's minds and establish this common ground.
Why is this? In a true-to-life film such as Beating the Bunny, people will sit there and say to themselves, "yup"... "uh-huh"..."I've been through that"..."that's me." And you'll probably get some laughs out of the situational comedy, too. This is exactly the kind of response we want. Relating with a person gets them to open up, think, and make decisions.
If you watch this film with your struggling friend and share your own story, you've got major conversation and prayer material. With this tool you'll be more effective in raising questions and creating conversation that might not be brought up using only written counseling material. The DVD can be pulled out, the film watched, and the curriculum (included on the DVD) completed in about 45 minutes.
When it comes down to it, Beating the Bunny is a very useful resource for leading a discussion on porn, an indispensible tool for pastors.
